This sumptuous jewel of an opera is best known for the ‘Flower Duet’, used for many years in single a well-known airline’s advertisement and, common with all operas from which a famous aria has emerged, Lakméactually amounts to a great deal more. It is beautifully balanced from a musical point of view, has real heartbreak at its centre and belongs in the stable of opera that absorbed influences from the orient and developed this exoticism into high Victorian art. The score is delicious and the story is one of sacrifice and honour and, since the opera remains a relative rarity in London, OHP are proud to see it return to our stage in a new production.
