Semyon Bychkov concludes his exploration of Tchaikovsky’s music with the composer’s great Pathétique symphony preceded by Rachmaninov’s colourful choral symphony The Bells.

The BBC Symphony Chorus and superb soloists perform Rachmaninov’s The Bells, a colourful choral symphony after Edgar Allen Poe. Tchaikovsky was a major influence on the young Rachmaninov and his great Pathétiquesymphony, a work Semyon Bychkov conducts with fervent intensity, closes the concert.

“Beloved Friend” is the term Tchaikovsky used to address Nadezhda in his letters, and it is the title Semyon Bychkov has given to his Tchaikovsky series, of which this concert with the BBCSO closed the Barbican leg.
