Mairéad Hickey and Jérémie Moreau conclude their journey through Schubert’s violin and piano works with his 4th Sonata also known as the Grand Duo. The moniker ‘Grand Duo’ suggests a big flashy virtuoso piece that could not be further from the truth. Although the Sonata encompasses the whole range of the violin’s technical resources, the emphasis is on melody and beauty of tone. The Fantasy in C major is very different; the opening alone is from another world where the piano tremolando takes the form of a mysterious undulating upswell with the violin’s achingly beautiful song entering almost imperceptibly. At the heart of this grippingly popular work is a wild set of variations on one his most famous songs before the music drifts effortlessly back into that magical opening. What follows is one of the most thrilling and heart-stopping finales you could wish for. Not to be missed.
