Crisp and sparkling, the Second Piano Concerto is like a posh night out when everyone is on their best behaviour – restrained fun but with the potential for more. That ‘more’ gets unleashed in No. 5 – music that’s defiant, raw and intense. If No. 2 was a kick about in the park, No. 5 is match day at St. James’ Park – an absolute unit of a piano concerto that re-wrote the rule book: grand, loud and with a lot of swagger.
