Known for his captivating tone and phenomenal technique, Johan Dalene is an ideal match for the sweeping, cinematic themes in Korngold’s Violin Concerto. Dorothy Howell, admired by Edward Elgar and Henry Wood, broke gender barriers to become a major figure in London’s musical life, and her 1918 work Lamia was premiered to huge acclaim. Just over a decade later, William Walton channelled the anguish of lost love into his Symphony No.1 – now considered one of the greatest English symphonies. It’s a work Vasily Petrenko has praised, and he delivers it tonight to mark its composer’s 125th birthday.
