Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, his final work, brings this concert to a blazing and triumphant close. Sweeping, nostalgic and ultimately triumphant, it ends in a radiant Alleluia — a powerful farewell and affirmation of life.
Around it, music of shifting light and deep introspection unfolds. Grace-Evangeline Mason’s An Everywhere of Silver, inspired by Emily Dickinson, shimmers with oceanic colour and fragile brilliance. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Second Cello Concerto, performed by Jaemin Han, is spare, searching and intensely personal, building to moments of sudden, overwhelming power.
