With Daniel-Lesur’s *Le Cantique des Cantiques*, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, conducted by Swedish conductor Sofi Jeannin, presents one of the highlights of the musical repertoire. It is based on the biblical Song of Songs, in which a man and a woman sing of their love and longing and praise each other’s beauty. This timeless work is not about a story, but about the interplay of longing and fulfillment, separation and reunion.
Preceding this is The Great Alone, a new large-scale choral work composed especially for tonight by the Dutch composer Rob Zuidam. Drawing on various sources, he explores the feeling of deep cosmic loneliness, captured by Fermi in “But where is everybody?” An evening that takes you from the deepest loneliness to the celebration of the symbiotic love between two people.
