A towering figure among today’s pianists, Elisabeth Leonskaja has lived with Schubert’s music throughout her long career, finding new depths in its lyricism, drama and silences.
The Three Piano Pieces, D.946, inhabit a world of striking contrasts. Written during Schubert’s final year, they move between restless urgency, song-like tenderness and moments of disarming simplicity.
The Wanderer Fantasy belongs to a very different period and unleashes the piano on an almost orchestral scale. Four interconnected movements grow from a single idea, with music from Schubert’s own song ‘Der Wanderer’ at its heart.
Finally comes the B flat Sonata, D.960, completed just weeks before Schubert’s death. Its spacious opening, disturbed by mysterious murmurs from the depths of the piano, leads into music of profound stillness, melancholy and sudden light.
In Leonskaja’s hands, this is a journey deep into the musical world of a composer for whom she has held a lifelong love.
