Howells’ love of the county of his birth shines through in the glorious music of this intimate recital. His string quartet In Gloucestershire was originally written in 1916, but Howells had to work hard to reconstruct the piece after it was lost on the train from Lydney. Undoubtedly, the county’s beautiful landscapes dance through the mind in its stirring melodies. ‘Chosen’ Tune refers to Chosen Hill, where the patchwork of Gloucestershire spreads out below from the Forest of Dean to the Cotswold Hills. Howells’ friend and former teacher Charles Wood’s evocative ‘Highgate’ Quartet completes the programme.
