In the first half of the double bill, Jean Rondeau invites you to surrender to uninterrupted music, as he combines works and improvisations in an exploration of the sound of the harpsichord.
Let go of expectations and let the music wash over you, absorbing you in the unexpected.
This is live music with the fluidity of a stroll: one which lets you meander without any abrupt stops, without needing to know what’s around the bend.
There’s a musical outpouring to be discovered at every turn – and that’s precisely what makes it so beautiful.
What may seem like a new way of listening has its roots in the past: Rondeau seeks to revive the kind of harpsichord improvisation that was once common in Baroque performance.
For the second part of the double bill, Rondeau teams up with percussionist Tancrède Kummer in UNDR, a musical encounter that deconstructs Bach’s Goldberg Variations.
Described as ‘one of the most natural performers one is likely to hear on a classical music stage’ by the Washington Post, Jean Rondeau is a global ambassador for his instrument. His outstanding talent and innovative approach to keyboard repertoire are widely acclaimed.
Jean Rondeau is a Southbank Centre Resident Artist for Classical Music: Spring/Summer 2027.
