It was not until the twentieth century that women started to take up the transverse flute. During the Romantic period, it was considered inappropriate for women to play brass and woodwind instruments, and French music schools only taught men in their flute classes. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that women composers wrote extensively for the instrument, as can be seen from the pieces featured in this concert. One possible explanation for this paradox is that by venturing into a musical field largely neglected by their male counterparts, these women achieved greater dissemination of their work.
