A concert of pieces written by the 21-year old composer, Malcolm Arnold.
Julian Lloyd Webber launches a day of live performances of Arnold’s music for strings, wind and brass from 11am at Cripps Hall in the composer’s hometown of Northampton, to include the Cello Fantasy played by Jiaxin Cheng Lloyd Webber, followed by an evening Gala Concert at St Matthew's Church performed by Northampton Symphony Orchestras.
Malcolm Arnold completed his Piano Sonata in 1942 at just 21 years old. It is an enigmatic work, reflecting not so much the glories of the Arnolds' Cornish holiday as the war that was raging beyond. The first movement, in traditional sonata form, has a restlessness about it, a strongly dissonant second subject never allowing the calmer first subject to settle. The short Andante with its gentle, blues-tinged love theme is desperately sad, and roughly broken into by the third movement, a ghoulish military march. A candid portrait of the young composer.
