| Lonneke van Straalen | Violine |
Lonneke stands in the spotlight with her violin: one voice, one instrument, with a world of colors. In this solo program, the violin takes center stage not merely as an instrument, but as a laboratory for new ideas, new sounds, and new stories. Every note you hear is a direct voice from our time—music still warm from the hands that wrote or arranged it. From quiet intimacy to virtuoso explosions, from ancient polyphony to modern sound experiments.
Gerard Corbiau’s acclaimed film presents lavish stagings of masterpieces from Baroque opera, crafted down to the smallest details, while simultaneously painting a moving portrait of Farinelli’s extraordinary and often tragic life. The exquisite beauty of the voice that made Farinelli the most sought-after singer of his time, and the horrific trauma of the castration that created that voice, form the powerful poetic contrast that characterizes the film. Farinelli won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and another for production design, featuring meticulous and lavish reconstructions of Baroque opera. The film was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. The soundtrack—featuring music by many 18th-century masters such as Handel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, and Porpora—was awarded a César for Best Music.
