Starting dead quiet, Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto reels you in slowly, captivating you like a good story, gaining momentum all the time. The second movement is legendary, a high stakes war of notes between the piano and the orchestra and the ending leaves you on a high that’ll have you buzzing. Beethoven threw everything he had in one pot for his Choral Fantasy – an outrageous mix of symphony and piano concerto with some singing thrown in too. Show-off music, but none the worse for that.
