A dazzling new work, a jazz-inflected concerto and one of the great choral blockbusters promise a spectacular end to the season.
Santtu-Matias Rouvali leads a programme that moves from contemporary imagination to irresistible theatrical power. Julia Wolfe’s Fountain of Youth opens with bold sonorities and propulsive energy, setting the tone with music that feels urgent, vivid and alive. Guiness World Record holder Hayato Sumino is the soloist in Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, blending symphonic sweep, rhythmic punch and lyrical warmth in a work that glitters with metropolitan style.
Orff’s Carmina Burana crowns the season with one of the most electrifying works ever written for chorus and orchestra. Based on a remarkable collection of 13th-century poems discovered in a Bavarian monastery, its texts were written by rebellious medieval students and wandering scholars celebrating love, luck, springtime, drinking and the unpredictability of fortune. Alongside the famous O Fortuna are moments of wit and irreverence – including the unforgettable lament of a swan being roasted for dinner. Framed by O Fortuna at both its opening and close, the work turns the Wheel of Fortune full circle in a finale of overwhelming power that is impossible to forget.
