Dragon Dances & Jasmin Songs

A unique programme in which Baroque music and ancient Chinese musical traditions come together. In Dragon Dances & Jasmin Songs, Holland Baroque and the internationally acclaimed sheng virtuoso Wu Wei build on their previous collaboration, Silk Baroque - a project that received international acclaim and with which they also toured China.

Wu Wei plays the sheng, a traditional Chinese mouth organ with a history spanning over 3,000 years. The instrument is a marvel of sound, rhythm and melody, and immediately evokes the richness of Chinese musical culture. The inspiration for this new programme comes from historical European collections of traditional Chinese music, compiled in the 18th and 19th centuries – including the Jones Dalberg Collection (1802), the Grandville Bantock Collection (1911) and the Willeke Collection (1909). Holland Baroque, together with Wu Wei, breathes new life into this music, in a surprising and refined dialogue between East and West.
