In 1600, Emilio de’ Cavalieri created one of the earliest musical theatre works in Western music history with his Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo. Even before the first operas emerged in Florence, audiences in Rome were swept away by an unprecedented musical narrative. A living dialogue between soul and body, between desire and conscience, between heaven and earth. What must have captivated the ears and hearts of listeners back then still resonates today: a profound reflection on the meaning of existence.

Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L’Arpeggiata have been at the pinnacle of the early music world for decades. Their 2004 recording of this work became a benchmark.
