Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances are as brash, as bright and as riotously entertaining as his adopted USA. But they’re also haunted by nostalgia – and the irresistibly romantic tunes he wrote better than anyone else. Peter Oundjian loves them, and they’re a dazzling climax to a concert that begins with Messiaen’s perfumed French miniatures before the masterly Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky unleashes all his powers in a concerto fit for an Emperor.
