| Musicians from Orpheus Baroque Stockholm |
For centuries, their names have stood in the shadows. Signore, alzatevi (Ladies, arise) is a tribute to the female pioneers who defied the limitations of their time and contributed to music history – from the Baroque to the Classical era. The programme spans two centuries.
From Francesca Caccini’s groundbreaking 17th-century drama and Isabella Leonarda’s sacred depth, via Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre’s French brilliance, to Marianne von Martínez and Franziska Lebrun’s high Classical virtuosity on the threshold of the 19th century. Rarely heard voices are also given space, including Mrs Philharmonica (a pseudonym used by an unknown English composer) and Wilhelmine of Bayreuth.
Orfeus Barock Stockholm was founded in 2015 and has established itself as one of the leading Nordic ensembles for early music. Orfeus Barock consists of musicians from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra alongside distinguished freelance Baroque specialists. Its artistic directors are the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal cellist Johannes Rostamo and lutenist Jonas Nordberg. As guest directors, Orfeus Barock invites leading musicians from the Swedish and international early music scene.
This time, we hear the ensemble in its more chamber music-oriented setting under the banner of Orpheus’s Treasure Trove.
