Ballet for Children has been a part of the main programme at the New National Theatre, Tokyo since 2009, providing future generations of children the opportunity to experience the art of ballet with their parents.
In summer 2021, we will be presenting the revival of the highly acclaimed 'Japanese Fairy Tale Ballet for all the Family "RYUUGUU - The Turtle Princess"', a new production for 2020 by Moriyama Kaiji. Based on a fairy tale from the well-known story of Urashima Taro, this work has elements of classical Japanese theatre throughout. The playful design of the set and the stage projections combine with the expressiveness of the ballet to create a world of wonder in the NNTT's Opera Palace. Taro is mesmerised by the delightful sea creatures in the magnificent Palace of Ryuuguu and the mysterious Chamber of Four Seasons where all four seasons can be enjoyed all at once. But what fate awaits Taro when he returns home? This Japanese-themed NNTT ballet fantasy is a must-see for all ballet fans, whether children or adults.
