Festival: German Mozart Festival

May 11th – 26th 2019

Every year in May, Augsburg welcomes the international world elite of classical music. The German Mozart Festival presents not only the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart but also bears in mind the legacy of his father, Augsburg native Leopold Mozart, promoting an insight into the “miracle of Mozart”, as his music is discovered in new contexts through every epoch and style.

Top level artists and ensembles can be heard in the magnificent Baroque halls and churches of the German Mozart city. The range of concerts on offer extends from intimate chamber music through oratorios and symphonies to the legendary club night.

Every year new developments emerge in dialogue with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the wealth of ideas of his musical genius – a Mozart who eagerly absorbed everything he was exposed to and who inspires and provokes even today; who was far ahead of his time, although not independent of the age in which he lived.

Augsburg, the German Mozart city, also concerns itself with significant personalities of the day with whom the father, Leopold and the son, Wolfgang, were in musical contact or competition. Those who wish to further understand the music of the Mozarts can acquire much background about friends, patrons, enemies, family and models, as well as imitators.

JubiLeo - 300 years Leopold Mozart, a mediator between worlds

In 2019 the city of Augsburg will celebrate the 300th anniversary of Leopold Mozart’s birth with a year-long festival program, highlighted by the German Mozart Festival and the International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart. The focus of the festivities is on Leopold Mozart himself, a comprehensive intellectual spirit and versatile personality of his time: parent and educator, musician and composer, networker and manager and in particular, enlightened European.
