Gripping from take-off to landing. — GUARDIAN

Jealousy, desire, despair, light comedy and genial warmth: Handel’s famous Venetian-style opera has it all. It’s small wonder that it is one of the most enduring of all of operas of the period.

After the majestic opening of its beloved aria “Ombra mai fu”, the opera gathers momentum and hurtles forward through a dizzying display of vocal acrobatics and musical (and visual, as it turns out!) fireworks.

ETO's production – highly praised in the press and loved by audiences when it was first performed in 2011 – lovingly recreates the pivotal moment in World War II history when Britain stood alone against Germany in Europe. RAF fighters, princes-turned-pilots, black-market smugglers and battlefield nurses cross paths under the wings of battered Spitfires, their passions heightened by the dramatic events happening around them, in Britain’s finest hour.

Julia Riley, Laura Mitchell, Clint van der Linde and Andrew Slater reprise their roles for ETO, and we introduce exciting young soprano Galina Averina.

Sung in English with surtitles.
