When soprano Deborah Voigt entered the stage of Oberlin College’s Finney Chapel for her recital on Sunday evening, she was every bit the diva, resplendent in a sparkling gold gown, and with the equally grand setting of the chapel’s imposing pipe organ behind her.

It’s very difficult to write about Berlioz’s Les Troyens without mentioning its length. Tonight’s cinema screening of Fransesca Zambello’s lush production was billed at 341 minutes – that’s 5.6 hours. But beamed live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, those 5.6 hours entailed spectacular operatic entertainment.

It’s pretty luxurious to be able to stumble out of your front door at ten to six, wander five minutes round the corner to your friendly local cinema, be greeted with a glass of sparkling wine, and then watch a high-definition live screening of a top contemporary opera production at the Met.
