From Buenos Aires to Chicago, from Helsinki to Tokyo, and from Auckland to Shanghai: Barrie Kosky’s production of The Magic Flute has delighted audiences around the world and can, without exaggeration, be called the ultimate export hit of the Komische Oper Berlin. After a two-year absence, Kosky’s Magic Flute is finally back on stage in Berlin.
Its unmistakable charm comes from the artistry of the British theatre company 1927, with whose animations Tamino, Pamina, Papageno, and the Queen of the Night interact so seamlessly that the images themselves appear part of the real environment. The result is a Magic Flute with fantastical dragons, pink elephants, dancing constellations, and flying butterfly boys in a magical road movie on the way to true love. It’s a living picture book offering a ‘delightfully absurd blend of silent and animated film’. [BERLINER MORGENPOST]
