French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard has a long-standing relationship with the Muziekgebouw. Over the years, he has performed Ligeti, Kurtág, monumental works by Messiaen, and Debussy’s preludes. Previously, he combined Beethoven with Stockhausen, and now he is doing the same with Charles Ives. On the programme: two ‘unplayable’ sonatas, legendary for their scale and enduring impact.
Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata was not performed until 1836, following the composer’s death, by the polymath Franz Liszt. In no other sonata was Beethoven more daring. Ives’ Concord Sonata also had to wait 20 years for its premiere. In this work, Ives incorporated quotations from Beethoven: the famous opening bars of his Fifth Symphony as well as fragments from the Hammerklavier Sonata (!). An overwhelming concert that spectacularly opens the ears.
