Music Worcester commemorates our country’s 250th birthday with a program that reflects our country’s motto: e pluribus unum (“out of many, one”) and celebrates equality, hope, and our shared humanity.
The program – as diverse as our nation and its people – was hand-selected by 2026-2027 Artist-in-Residence Dr. Everett McCorvey, who will conduct. It is anchored by Margaret Bonds’ Credo and Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the fourth movement of his 9th Symphony, and features the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band. Credo, with words by W.E.B. DuBois, reflects the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights era, while promoting equality among all. The Ode to Joy is a celebration of humanity’s ability to transcend differences and live together in harmony.
The concert will also feature work by two of the country’s most well-known composers, Aaron Copland (Fanfare for the Common Man) and Leonard Bernstein (Make Our Garden Grow from Candide). To further echo the theme of many becoming one, the concert will feature the voices of four different choirs: the Soldiers’ Chorus is joined by the Bridgewater State University Choral Society, First Unitarian Church Choir, and Worcester Children’s Chorus plus soloists from American Spiritual Ensemble.
