A deeply devout plea for forgiveness set to the most beautiful choral music. That is Arvo Pärt’s *Kanon Pokajanen*. Even for non-believers, the work is a mesmerizing meditation lasting nearly an hour and a half. Following Cappella Amsterdam’s highly successful performance a few years ago, the Latvian Radio Choir now presents this masterpiece. It is almost impossible to get any closer to Pärt’s world.
Arvo Pärt completed his Kanon Pokajanen in 1997 for the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral. Pärt based the work on the complete hymn of repentance from the Eastern Orthodox liturgy. He had already used parts of this hymn in earlier compositions, but setting the complete text was an “extremely enriching experience” for the composer. It doesn’t get any more spiritual than the Kanon.
