All of Beethoven’s symphonies are musical milestones. In this concert video, French conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.

With irrepressible will and great integrity, Ludwig van Beethoven created immortal music and the nine symphonies are the very foundation of his life’s work. They comprise unique and infinite universes that can be explored over and over; there is always something new to be discovered.

Symphony No. 7 was a great success at its world premiere. This outward-facing music is vigorously energetic and charged with drama. At the time, Napoleon had besieged Vienna, which had a deep impact on Beethoven. The second movement is therefore sometimes interpreted as a monument to humankind’s suffering and the finale as a victorious triumph. With its powerful rhythms, it is also one of Beethoven’s most muscular symphonies.

Jean-Cristophe Spinosi, who has been lauded for his ability to balance musical power and energy with a sense for details and lyrical lines, conducts the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

Filmed in February 2017.
