Bruch, Holst and Biber

Royal Northern Sinfonia take to the stage in the intimate surroundings of Sage Two, with double bassist Will Duerden stepping into the limelight as both soloist and director. This is like a musical pick and mix, with a brightly coloured and highly flavoured selection of music that ranges from the ancient to recent, including music by Baroque composer Lully and one of the 20th century’s best-loved composers, Gustav Holst.

A swinging march by Lully gets the party started, and then we go straight into the gorgeous emotional depths of Kol Nidrei. The double bass gets to show off in the fast and flashy Capriccio di Bravura while earlier we hear Biber’s anarchic Battalia – a musical depiction of war and battles.
