It’s a place where you can hear rock legends or pop icons on the same night as folk trios or opera singers. Where new musicians are nurtured and showcased on the same stages as platinum-selling performers. And where youth choirs and tambourine-shaking toddlers practise in the same spaces as our acclaimed orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia.
Because as an international centre for music we’re focused on creating and celebrating outstanding music – whether that’s unearthing or growing talent from our region or bringing the world’s best artists to our stages. And as a charity we’re focused on making sure all of that is available to anyone – no matter where you’re from, how old you are, how much money you have, or what challenges you face.
Which is why every year more than 2 million people are able to join us for top-notch gigs, concerts, and classes – in our own venue at Gateshead Quays, out in communities across the North East, and through livestreamed performances and digital lessons.
So whether you’re making it up or taking it in, you’ll find music lives and grows here.
We don’t offer childcare or crèche facilities. That said, children are welcome at our events (unless there’s specific age guidance on the show) and we do our best to make family visits as easy and enjoyable as possible. For family concerts, there’ll usually be extra pre-concert activities on the Concourse to make your visit extra fun.
How to get there
By train: Newcastle Central Station is the closest train station, which is a 20-minute walk away from the venue.
By metro: Gateshead Metro Station is just a 10-minute walk from the venue. Travel is free to and from Gateshead for two hours before and after your event with your event ticket.
By bus: There’ve been a few changes to local bus routes, and some nearby stops aren’t currently in use. We recommend checking the latest updates on the Go North East website before you set off.
By car (parking): There’s a car park right behind the venue, less than 200 metres from the doors. Put NE8 2BA into your navigation system to get straight there.
Our venue is fully wheelchair accessible and we’re committed to making sure everyone feels welcome and supported during their visit. You’ll find step-free access throughout the building, including the Box Office, toilets, bars, café, restaurant and performance spaces. Our Changing Places toilet includes a hoist, changing table and shower. Our car park (just behind the venue) has lift access and priority spaces for Blue Badge holders close to the entrance. Assistance dogs are welcome in all public areas and performance spaces and we’re always happy to provide quiet areas if you need a break from the crowd.
To book a wheelchair space or chat through any specific access needs, just get in touch with our Box Office team at boxoffice@theglasshouseicm.org or call 0191 443 4661. If you are D/deaf or disabled and have a specific access requirement, we recommend joining our free Access Scheme. By answering a few quick questions, we can find the best seats for you and store your preferences for future bookings. You may also be eligible for a free ticket for a Personal Assistant.
We programme relaxed performances throughout the year, where the house lights stay on, the doors remain open, intervals are removed and a chill-out room is available nearby. If sound is a concern, ear plugs and over-ear defenders can be requested from any member of the team.
We also offer early access if you’d prefer to be seated before the rest of the audience arrives, and we’re happy to arrange a pre-event familiarisation trip so you can explore the space in advance. If there’s anything else that would help make your visit more comfortable, just let us know - we’re always happy to help.
Enjoy classic British dishes with a Northern twist at the in-house Brasserie, just steps from the stage. Book a table with your ticket or online until 3pm on show day. If you prefer something lighter, visit our Café for sweet treats and drinks—no booking needed. There are also five bars and a pub on-site, serving craft beers and local pours. Bars open two hours before showtime, with pre-order for interval drinks available. After the show, enjoy 10% off drinks for 30 minutes. Near the venue, try Sapori, Khai Khai, or St. Vincent for great pre-show dining with Italian, Indian, or French-inspired flavours.
There’s no dress code here, just wear what makes you happy! Whether you feel like dressing up or keeping it casual, you’ll be in good company. There is air conditioning in both the halls so bring an extra layer if you think you might get chilly.
