Benjamin Frith | Piano |
Robert Plane | Clarinete |
The incredible Gould Piano Trio has been at the forefront of the chamber music scene for over 25 years now. They are well-known both as musicians and hosts of the annual summer music festival in Corbridge. Tonight they’ll be joined by another familiar face: Robert Plane, former principal clarinet with Royal Northern Sinfonia.
Written when he was just 15 years old, Schubert’s single-movement Trio in B flat shows youthful charm and offers a glimpse into the composer’s future genius. It is followed by Debussy’s elegant Première Rhapsodie for clarinet and piano. You’ll also hear two very different pieces by Piers Helawell, including a new work made to celebrate the 1350th anniversary of St. Wilfred founding Corbridge Church, where the work makes its premiere this July.
The evening closes with Beethoven’s dramatic Piano Trio in D Major, famously nicknamed ‘Ghost’ for its moments of spectral beauty and unsettling intensity.
