The star cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason performs the piece that made him want to pick up the instrument, Elgar’s deeply moving cello concerto. The composer believed it was ‘the best thing I ever wrote.’

What’s the secret to the melancholy delights of Elgar’s concerto? It may be the lonely sound of the cello, isolated between the high woodwind and the low strings. Lovers of the movie Tár will recognise it as the sound of impossible romance.

Kanneh-Mason joins Sinfonia of London for their second visit this season under the meticulous baton of John Wilson. The orchestra will surround this celebrated work of English repertoire fittingly with Delius’ A Song of Summer and Vaughan Williams London Symphony.

Since he won the BBC Young Musician award a decade ago, Kanneh-Mason has attracted huge numbers of enthusiastic fans. His album Elgar was the first classical album to break into the top ten in more than 30 years.
