Monsters of the mind: Idomeneo at the Buxton Festival

Paul Nilon (Idomeneo) © Richard Hubert Smith
Stephen Medcalf directs a coherent staging of Mozart’s opera seria in which Idomeneo’s inner demons are to be battled.

Revolutionary jungle fever: Verdi's Alzira in Buxton

James Cleverton (Gusmano) and Jung Soo Yun (Zamoro) © Richard Hubert Smith
A spirited account of Verdi's early opera in its first professional UK staging, nowhere near as “ugly” as Verdi would have had us believe.

For teenage kicks: Mozart's Lucio Silla at Buxton International Festival

The cast of Lucio Silla © Robert Workman
The fashion for reviving Mozart's teenage operas brings a vocally dazzling production of Lucio Silla to Buxton, nevertheless hampered by the work's own lack of believable drama and some fairly flat staging.

Fresh peaches of temptation

Bradley Smith (Albert) © Robert Workman
A period-perfect Albert Herring from Francis Matthews for Buxton International Festival takes time to settle into its stride, but provides plenty of laughs along the way.

Verdi's Macbeth at Buxton International Festival

Jung Soo Yun (Macduff) and the company © Robert Workman
A searing, edge-of-your-seat spinetingler from Elijah Moshinsky makes the strongest possible case for Verdi's first Macbeth, ideally suited to the proportions of Buxton's beautiful Opera House.

The Yeomen of the Guard strongly sung

© Buxton Opera Festival
This Yeomen of the Guard was one of the best sung G&S performances I have heard. The traditional but inventive production will appeal to novices and enthusiasts alike.
