On being offered the libretto of Messiah for his 1739-40 season, Handel responded that he wanted ‘to please
the Town with something of a gayer turn’. This enchanting ode was the result – the most beguiling treatment
imaginable of differing human temperaments, with some of Handel’s liveliest contrasts and loveliest word painting.
The Festival provides a rare opportunity to hear the complete work, Milton’s youthful poems being followed by
Jennens’ coda, with the wonderful duet ‘As steals the morn’ (judged the nation’s favourite piece of Handel in
a BBC poll in 2009). Tickets: £60 - £10. Booking opens online on 14th January and by phone on 21st January.
