In their compositions for double-reed instruments, artists of the Romantic period tended to be out of step with their own time. In their works, these instruments either referenced an earlier aesthetic, such as that of the Ancien Régime when they played a significant role in open-air music and social dancing, or they were used to evoke a pastoral atmosphere, as in the famous English horn solo in the William Tell Overture. However, composers were not seeking to imitate the past or revive folk culture; rather, they were aiming to forge new paths and reinvigorate a European aesthetic that was losing momentum.
