Berlioz is on dashing form in his Roman Carnival Overture, a sparkling concert piece that was originally intended for an opera.

Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto no. 4 is packed with some of the composer’s most gorgeous tunes. Composed in the US, rhythms from the roaring 1920s and inspiration from George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue bring a hint of jazz to the piece.

The organ has to wait a while for its big moment in Saint-Saëns’ Symphony no. 3, but it is well worth it. In the build-up are typically sumptuous melodies and some high drama for the orchestra.
