Italian influences abound as Sir Antonio Pappano presents a much-loved take on Paganini alongside a full-on celebration of the Eternal City, Rome, seen through the ages.

The twenty-fourth Caprice of Paganini has inspired composers from Liszt to Lutosławski, but it’s perhaps Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody for piano and orchestra that brings the most sparkle and passion to the already inspired original. Battling gladiators, the shimmering Trevi fountain and marching Roman armies are just some of the vivid scenes conjured up in Respighi’s atmospheric trio of tone poems, featuring some of the most dramatic and cinematic music ever written.
