It is our pleasure to present an exciting double bill for the new season. We hope you will enjoy the contrast between the British air of our new production, The Dream by Sir Frederick Ashton, and the bright and colourful Theme and Variations by George Balanchine.

The Dream

This ballet by British master Sir Frederick Ashton is based on a play by Shakespeare. The meticulous footwork and truly English mime bring a world of forests and fairies to life, as though it had leapt straight from the pages of a picture book. Highlights include the comical scene of Puck the fairy stirring up human-like turmoil among the fairies and the amazing pas de deux performed by the fairy queen and king, Titania and Oberon.

Theme and Variations

Produced by George Balanchine in 1947, this work is well known as a homage to Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the ballet of imperial Russia. This is a graceful and dignified piece, in which Tchaikovsky's music is delicately expressed through the steps and movements. The National Ballet of Japan has performed this work a number of times since its premiere in 2000, and it has been very well received for the beauty of the ensemble. Come and enjoy choreography of Balanchine, lauded as "music for the eyes".
