About the festival

Engelberg

Zwischentöne Chamber Music Festival, hosted by the Merel Quartet, features prominent guest artists such as Ian Bostridge, Eivind Ringstad, Claudio Martínez Mehner, Saskia Giorgini and Irina Ungureanu. The artistic directors aim to create a program which awakens, in themselves as well as the audience, desire and joy in the unexpected interplay of the familiar and the unkown. Under the title “Affairs of the Heart”, this year’s festival features favorites such as Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin and Ralph Vaughan Williams On Wenlock Edge with Ian Bostridge, Mozart’s C Major String Quintet, Brahms Clarinet Trio and César Franck’s Piano Quintet as well as contemporary works by Wyttenbach, Zinsstag, Kõrvits and Kurtág. Two Young Festival Artists, join us and are integrated into various chamber groups for an intensive learning experience.

How to get there?

Nearest airports are Zürich and Basel EuroAirport. There are several train connections each hour from Zürich and Basel Airports. The journey takes approximately 2 hours & 15 minutes from the airport, or 1 hour 40 minutes from Zürich Main Station. For more information please click here.

With car: from any direction follow the A2 motorway and take the Stans-Süd exit. Then follow the main road and the signs to Engelberg. The Kursaal is located in the center of the village, in the Kempinski Palace Hotel, which has underground parking.

Mountain weather is often warm during the day but chilly in the evenings at this time of year. Concertwear is casual chic.

Food & drink

There are many excellent restaurants in Engelberg, including the gourmet restaurant Cattani in the Kempinski Palace Hotel and the restaurant Urchig in the H+ Hotel serving more traditional Swiss dishes. Between the concerts there are small dishes and snacks available in the bar of the Kempinski Palace Hotel and before the Late-Night concert there are snacks and drinks available in the Hotel Terrace.
