Ça y est... Vendredi 19 décembre a eu lieu le dernier concert de musique classique à la Salle Pleyel. L’ONDIF et Wayne Marshall ont proposé pour l'occasion plusieurs “chefs-d’œuvre de la musique classique au cinéma”. Un maître-mot pour cette soirée si spéciale : émotion. 

Des bravos fusaient déjà à l’entrée de Muti sur scène. Plongés dans un Oiseau de feu légendaire, fascinant, évident, puis littéralement soulevés par un bis patriotique chargé de sens et d'énergie, les spectateurs de Pleyel ne se remettront pas aisément de la venue du maestro.

Une programmation cohérente et originale, une prestation imparfaite mais sincère, des idées nouvelles : le concert Empereur de l'ONDIF, avec ses trois campagnes napoléoniennes, fut un concert intelligent.

L'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France accueillait le chef russe Vasily Petrenko et la violoniste Baiba Skride pour un superbe voyage dans les ténèbres de Szymanowski et de Mahler.

Le choix du programme, très homogène, s’est porté sur trois œuvres majeures du répertoire romantique pour violon et piano pour un récital dont on admire la perfection d'exécution.

Soirée-événement en ce 10 octobre : un concert consacré aux musiques de films de Roman Polanski, et la remise du prix France Musique/Sacem de la Musique de Film 2014. Un bel hommage au cinéma par l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Arrivés à Paris pour l'avant-dernière étape de leur tournée européenne, Franz Welser-Möst et l'Orchestre de Cleveland ont interprété Brahms avec une précision aussi intimidante que remarquable.

La seule affiche de ce concert réunissant Daniel Barenboim, Radu Lupu et la Staatskapelle de Berlin avait fait venir à Pleyel la foule des grands jours.

Rafał Blechacz est venu à Pleyel défendre les mérites de la jeunesse, bien sûr, mais aussi, du haut de ses 28 ans, l’incroyable maturité de son jeu, qui ferait pâlir de jalousie plus d’un prodige.

Krystian Zimerman s'est engagé dans les trois dernières sonates de Beethoven comme s'il était question de vie ou de mort, et chacun a retenu son souffle devant le mystère du génie qui s'incarnait sur scène.

Don Juan, sept lieder de Strauss et Titan : les Bamberger Symphoniker nous offraient ce soir un vaste aperçu de l'idéal postromantique allemand, tant amoureux qu'héroïque. À leur tête, le charismatique Jonathan Nott a suscité la totale adhésion du public, malgré les imperfections de son orchestre et de sa battue.

A rich variety of works by Steve Reich form an enthralling concert from Kristjan Järvi and the MDR Rundfunk orchestra at the Salle Pleyel.

Myung-Whun Chung a offert à Pleyel une saisissante interprétation de cette symphonie funeste: depuis les tourments du premier mouvement jusqu'à la sérénité finale, l'auditoire est resté sous le choc.

Le 15 avril, Ton Koopman interprétait la Passion selon Saint Matthieu avec l’Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir. Un oratorio absolument incontournable, dont la subtilité musicale dépasse le cadre de la foi.

La Symphonie no. 2 en ut mineur, dite « Résurrection » de Gustav Mahler, est sans aucun doute l’un des chefs d’œuvre du répertoire. Cette musique inspirée, contrastée, pensée et conçue telle une arche tendue de la mort à la résurrection est, pour les chefs qui s’y attèlent, un véritable défi.

La venue de Jordi Savall à la salle Pleyel est toujours un événement très attendu. Lundi 7 avril, il donnait avec son ensemble Le Concert des Nations un programme sous-titré « Tempêtes, Orages et Fêtes marines (1674-1764) ».

A la tête du LSO, Valery Gergiev a présenté à Paris un programme transeuropéen : Messiaen, Chopin et Scriabine. Mystique dans les Offrandes oubliées et le Divin Poème, il s'est révélé plus terne dans le Deuxième concerto pour piano, interprété par la jeune star Daniil Trifonov. 

Poétique plus que métaphysique, le Mahler de Michael Tilson Thomas et du San Francisco Symphony a largement convaincu le public de la salle Pleyel ; l'excellence de l'orchestre et la beauté des voix ont compensé sans peine l'apparente sobriété de l'interprétation pour transporter les auditeurs.

Les occasions d’entendre les Gurrelieder d’Arnold Schönberg ne sont pas si fréquentes.

Once again, Gergiev drew the best from his musicians: fantastic woodwind solos, impressive brass calls, extreme nuances within the strings - and an extreme dynamic range.

With the brilliant chamber choir Accentus and the recently formed period orchestra Insula behind her, Laurence Equilbey knows how to immediately captivate and move the modern listener.

Mussorgsky’s rich, complex music and Boris Godunov’s tragic story is told with very original vision in Tugan Sokhiev’s concert version. The Salle Pleyel made no mistake about it: this Boris will stay in our memories for a while.

At the Salle Pleyel, the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France performed a new piece by Alberto Colla, Mendelssohn’s famous Violin Concerto with James Ehnes, and Brahms’ Second Symphony, all conducted by Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård.

Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto and Shostakovich’s “Leningrad” symphony were wonderfully played by the Orchestre de Paris and Alexander Toradze at the Salle Pleyel, despite Mikko Franck's last-minute cancellation.

Continuing their Shostakovich cycle, the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev brought the Fourth and Ninth Symphonies to the Salle Pleyel, as well as the Concerto for Piano and Trumpet, with pianist Daniil Trifonov.

William Christie named this Salle Pleyel concert “Music for Queen Caroline”, a moving tribute to Handel’s friend, protector and patron, Queen Caroline of Great Britain.

Within the framework of a concert series entitled “Alexandre Tharaud domaine privé” (“Alexandre Tharaud’s Private Domain”) at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and its musical director Emmanuel Krivine chose an eclectic program with three very different pieces showcasing the orchestra’s great abilities: J.

Last Friday, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and its musical director Myung-Whun Chung offered a wonderful panorama of French music: Claude Debussy’s impressionism, Olivier Messiaen’s abstraction and Camille Saint-Saëns’ romanticism.

Debussy, Stravinsky, Bartók and Ravel: this program was a perfect opportunity for the Orchestre de Paris to show off its beautiful playing and brilliant technique with modernist masterpieces.

Let’s be clear: this was a performance of the highest order. From the first five notes of the overture, the sixteen-member orchestra Armonia Aténéa led by George Petrou ravished the audience of the Salle Pleyel with Handel’s full splendour.

Romanticism found both its source and its end at Salle Pleyel on Tuesday night: Beethoven’s Egmont overture, incidental music for a heroic drama written by Goethe, and his Fifth Symphony, where it has been said that “Fate knocks at the door” – both works composed before 1810 – and Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs, created in 1948, when the last notes of Romanticism in music history were dying slow

The Orchestre de Paris’ 2013/14 season opened with a cymbal crash. Orages (meaning “thunderstorms” in French) was commissioned by the Orchestre de Paris to the Lebanese composer Bechara El-Khoury. In this musical storm, sounds hurt each other, as if superimposed.

The Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle came to Paris last weekend for an eclectic program: Mozart’s final three symphonies on Saturday night, and the decadence of Schoenberg, Berg and Stravinsky on Sunday afternoon.

One thing is for sure: whether you like Baroque opera or not, you will never be bored by an opera conducted by René Jacobs. By shaking up convention with his subtle readings, sometimes even rewriting the composer’s score, the Belgian conductor is the one of those rare few who always find an elegant way to bring the repetitive mannerisms of the Baroque to life.

Writing a positive review is not an easy task. When confronted with something lacking error, a review can go one of two ways: a brief and simple praise of all involved and a summary of the evening, or an over-the-top full-blown confession of awe and admiration. Spoiler alert: this review is the latter.

The opening of Henri Dutilleux’s Symphony no. 1, with its distinctive pizzicato opening full of tension and curiosity, opened the concert not with a bang but rather a seductive lure.

The Salle Pleyel’s programmatic dichotomy between “memory” and “creation” continually seeks to promote the more established names in classical music, whilst also shedding light on lesser-known repertoires from all musical epochs.

It is said that whilst developing a successful career as a violinist, the young Emmanuel Krivine was advised by the distinguished conductor Karl Böhm to further pursue his passion for conducting. Thankfully, Krivine took heed of such advice, or we would not today have what is undoubtedly one of Europe’s finest conductors.

The programme notes suggested that Glinka was the father of Russian nationalism. Perhaps this is the case, but his overture to his second opera, Ruslan and Ludmilla, is undeniably an Italianate work, surely influenced by his meetings with Donizetti and Bellini in 1830.
