The 19th century's fascination with William Shakespeare blossomed into numerous operatic versions of his plays. One of the most frequently adapted was Hamlet, the tragic tale of the Prince of Denmark. This unusual and much appreciated Hamlet, which features a semi-happy ending, is by Ambroise Thomas, an excellent exponent of French lyric drama, whose works are midway between grand opéra and Romantic bel canto. Thomas has bequeathed us a score rich in nuances and dramatic plot developments, including a madness aria for Ophélie.
Baritone Carlos Álvarez and soprano Diana Damrau head a star-studded cast, while Daniel Oren will also be back, to conduct the Liceu's orchestra and chorus.
