The splendid magic of Baroque theatre on the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin: in the celebrated production by the Norwegian theatre magician Stefan Herheim and with musical direction by Baroque specialist Konrad Junghänel , Handel's opera Xerxes becomes a feast for the eyes, ears and senses. With grand opulence and a loving eye for detail, Herheim tells the story of the mighty Persian King Xerxes, who commands great armies and yet who is helpless in the face of love. Herhaim does so in a way which humorously toys with theatrical conventions and which is filled with the spirit of Handel's era, yet still creates a link to the here and now – »a miracle of theatre which proves that education and history-conscious complexity of thought can increase our ability to enjoy«. [FAZ].
