Die Fledermaus at The Grange: Cabaret meets G&S

Myra Dubois (Frosch, centre stage) © Richard Hubert Smith
A fine singing cast gives creditable performances in Johann Stauss II's most famous operetta, but Paul Curran's updating of Act 2 to 1930s Berlin takes the fizz out of the Champagne.

ENO gives Thea Musgrave's Mary, Queen of Scots a worthy performance

Musgrave's powerful depiction of a powerful woman at the mercy of male manipulation receives a strong staging from at ENO.

The darker side of G&S: Yeomen of the Guard at Holland Park

Matthew Kellett (Jack Point) © Ellie Kurttz
Some good singing performances can't overcome a dated feeling of Gilbert's humour: the evening improves as the storm clouds gather.

The Rake's Progress at The Grange: richly entertaining

Alexandra Oomens (Anne Trulove) and Adam Temple-Smith (Tom Rakewell) © Craig Fuller
Singing performances are excellent, the staging is well crafted and Stravinsky's eclectic score entertains from start to finish. But it's an evening's opera that doesn't touch the soul.

Beneath the ice: a triumphant revival of ENO's Jenůfa

Jennifer Davis (Jenůfa) © ENO | Ellie Kurtz
David Alden's production is a vivid telling of Janáček's devastating village drama. With a terrific cast and a splendid performance from the pit, this revival is an unalloyed artistic success.

Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel strikes a sour note

A forgettable Hansel and Gretel is the worst offence of Antony McDonald’s leaden staging which returns to Covent Garden.
