Maria Frankel | Double Bass |
Martin Sturfält | Piano |
Pianist Martin Sturfält is a frequent guest at Konserthuset Stockholm as a chamber musician, and has also appeared several times as a soloist with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In this soup concert, he takes the stage together with a string quartet of orchestra members.
The programme features music by Czech pianist and composer Josef Labor – specifically his charming and playful Piano Quintet in E minor. Labor was active in Vienna and a well-known figure in the city’s vibrant musical life at the turn of the 20th century. He was a friend of Brahms, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Clara Schumann, and Gustav and Alma Mahler.
However, Labor was not at the forefront of musical innovation – instead, he drew inspiration from the classical tradition of Beethoven and early Romantics such as Robert Schumann. In this quintet, he chose the same instrumentation as Schubert’s famous Trout Quintet – with piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, rather than the more common two violins, viola, cello and piano setup.
