But What About

Life or theatre? A young German artist examines her life through 700 gouaches. Charlotte Salomon was always told her mother died of influenza, but the actual cause of death turned out to be suicide. What is still true in life, and what is not? This gripping music theatre performance brings Salomon’s world to life: 1930s Berlin, a place of lively cabaret music, but also under the dark cloud of emerging National Socialism.

‘I can either end my life or undertake something wildly unusual.’ Driven by this thought, Charlotte Salomon starts to create a kaleidoscopic, theatrical visual story of her life and family. In this performance, through projections and dynamic staging, Wishful Singing and But What About, show how self-expression can help us remain resilient in a complex world. Its relevance is undeniable.
