Verdi’s final great opera, Falstaff (1893), arrives at The Liceu Opera House in a vibrant production by Laurent Pelly. This sparkling comic masterpiece, with a libretto by Boito after Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor and Henry IV, depicts the hedonistic Sir John Falstaff—gluttonous, witty and irresistibly charming—whose schemes to seduce two married women backfire spectacularly. The staging, set in the 20th century, ends with a mirror reflecting the audience, inviting a laughter‑tinged self‑portrait.

Baritones Luca Salsi and Ambrogio Maestri alternate in the title role, supported by Carolina López Moreno, Roberta Mantegna, Serena Sáenz, Daniela Barcellona and Santiago Ballerini. Josep Pons conducts the Liceu Orchestra and Chorus, marking his final season as musical director of the Theatre.

A lustrous blend of wit and humanity, Falstaff celebrates life’s final laugh.
