Nijinsky | Music: Various Choreography: John Neumeier |
Hamburg Ballet |
John Neumeier’s Nijinsky is a compelling narrative ballet that delves into the life of the legendary Russian-Polish dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky. Celebrated for his virtuosity and expressive depth, Nijinsky's career was tragically curtailed by schizophrenia, leading to his early death at 29. Neumeier's 2000 creation captures Nijinsky's genius and inner turmoil, blending memories, emotions, and states of mind to portray his complex persona. Set against the opulent backdrop of early 20th-century Paris, the production features designs by Neumeier inspired by Léon Bakst and Alexandre Benois. The Symphony Orchestra of The Liceu Opera House, conducted by Josep Pons, performs a rich programme including works by Chopin, Schumann, Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, and others, enhancing the emotional depth of this theatrical tribute to a ballet icon.
