Where is home, and can music take you back there? That is the question at the centre of Coming Home with Music, the programme by the GRAMMY-nominated countertenor Reginald Mobley and lautten compagney BERLIN. For the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, they cover a broad arc spanning Baroque arias and European psalms through to spirituals, gospels and songs by Stevie Wonder. The main emphasis is on the meeting of Baroque and the present, from early music to Afro-American tradition. Well-known Handel arias like But who may abide the day of His coming (Messiah) or Heroes, when with glory burning (Joshua) stand side by side with moving spirituals such as Sometimes I feel like a motherless Child and Joshua fit the Battle of Jericho. Mobley, whose expressive voice transitions effortlessly between Handel and gospel music and between centuries and continents, reflects on the idea of music as home. The result is a moving musical journey from Africa to Europe and via London to the New World – a search for belonging that finds its destination in the music itself.
