Women hunt for men, a roasted swan sings a mournful song, the innkeeper plays at being abbot: the monks of 13th-century Benediktbeuern collected earthy poems. Seven centuries later, Carl Orff chose the finest of them for his Carmina Burana: a musical blockbuster for soloists, large chorus and even larger orchestra. Over the top? Certainly – and therefore utterly irresistible.
