The performance is a dialogue between the singer and the lyricist, and a contemporary interpretation of Robert Schumann’s *Frauenliebe und Leben*. In these love songs, Schumann expressed the 19th-century ideal of femininity. Their beauty has made the piece a classic, and for generations, young female singers have studied and performed these songs. But Schumann’s vision of femininity is no longer relevant today.

Daniëlle Zawadi and Elisabeth Hetherington took on the challenge of creating a new, contemporary interpretation of the songs and related cycles by Clara Schumann and Josephine Lang. With brand-new texts written specifically for this program and sung by Hetherington, their performance—featuring both spoken and sung text—presents a new vision of love and femininity.
